Free School Meals – New Changes from September 2026
There have been some changes to the Free School Meals system from September 2026. We want to make this as simple as possible for parents and carers.
What has changed?
From September 2026, all children whose families receive Universal Credit can qualify for Free School Meals, regardless of household income.
There are now two main groups:
Targeted Free School Meals
Your child may be eligible if your family receives Universal Credit and your household earnings are £7,400 or less per year. Other qualifying benefits may also make your child eligible.
Expanded Free School Meals
From September 2026, children whose families receive Universal Credit with earnings above £7,400 per year can also qualify for Free School Meals.
What do I need to do?
If your child is already receiving Free School Meals, you do not need to apply again. Lancashire County Council will recheck your claim.
If you receive Universal Credit and your child is not currently receiving Free School Meals, we encourage you to apply online.
Applying is important because, if your child is eligible, they can receive free school meals and your child may also qualify for other support.
What about Reception, Year 1 and Year 2?
All children in Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 receive free school meals through the Universal Infant Free School Meals scheme.
However, if you receive Universal Credit or another qualifying benefit, it is still important to register for Free School Meals, as your child may be entitled to additional support and the school may receive additional funding.

Lancashire County Council will confirm your eligibility by email. If your application is successful, they will let your child's school know.
